CAR Brake discs
Brake discs: common defects and their signs
- Wear out.
- Disc thickness is lower than acceptable.
- The brake pedal is vibrating during braking.
- Lines on the disc, caused by the brake pads work, are noticeable; cracks, shears, rust appeared.
- The discs got extremely hot.
- Brake pedal clearance enlarged.
- Screeching and rattling sounds are heard at the pedal pressing.
- Deformation.
- Deviation of the car from the set trajectory at braking.
- Notable wobbling of the steering wheel and the brake pedal at pressing.
- Screeching and foreign sounds from the wheel area which are heard at braking.
- Locking of brakes which appears at the brake pedal pressing.
How to repair or replace brake discs?
In case of insignificant wear out the brake discs can be repaired. Component turning is performed in order to repair them. The essence of it is in the following: disc overlayer is grinded down with the help of special equipment, thus its surface becomes smooth again. But you should remember that this method is applicable only for those discs with the residual thickness no lower than acceptable. Component turning should be performed only at the service station by experienced specialists because it takes special skills and appropriate equipment.
In case the disc cannot be repaired due to wear level or the nature of the defect, it is to be replaced. You should remember that the brake discs are to be replaced in pairs on one axle. New brake pads should be installed concurrently with disc replacement. This procedure is simple so you can perform it by yourself. Replacement process can differ according to construction features of different brands vehicles; generally the replacement algorithm of the brake disc is the following:
- Secure the car in a stationary position with the help of wheel chocks. Then you should unscrew the wheel bolts, lift the car body with the help of a jack and demount the wheel.
- Then you should pull the slave cylinder piston down.
- Then you should clean surface of the brake caliper and hub, unscrewing bolts which fixate the brake disc to the hub afterwards.
- After this you should remove the brake caliper and disassemble the caliper unit: demount brake pads, hold-down springs and the caliper bracket.
- Then you should remove the defective brake disc, install a new component in its position and assemble elements in reverse order.
Brake discs Information
Brake system of any vehicle is necessary in order to reduce speed or stop the vehicle. If the brake system is faulty, it is strictly prohibited to travel by car. After all, this can lead to serious consequences. Brake system consists of pads and disks, which are equally important for the entire brake gear of the car.
Today the most common is brake disc. It consists of a rotating brake disc and two fixed pads on both sides inside the caliper. The main element of this type of brake is a brake disc because the actuator applies force to it. Automotive brakes produce friction. So, between the disc and the brake mechanism there is a block. When braking, the kinetic energy is converted into thermal one. Brake discs and shoes are responsible for this process. In this case useful effect of the whole system depends on the speed of the distribution of heat. Brake discs have a high operational stability. This brake mechanism ensures a slight drop of braking efficiency when the brakes heat or water gets on the surface of friction.
In addition, they have a minimum response time, relatively low weight and better cooling (compared, for example, with drum brakes).
Remember that safety of the vehicle, defined by a correct functioning of the brake system, directly affects the safety of road users. That's why you need to take care of the quality of the brake system in your car and choose reliable brake discs. But it is not so easy. Drivers may have difficulty in selecting discs as today there is a great variety of these on the world market of auto parts. There is no doubt that the parts you buy must be original. These parts undergo a serious quality control and are able to last for a long time. You can buy original brake discs in our online shop. We also offer reasonable prices. In our online store you can also order parts like brake shoes and brake drum.
