How to repair or replace fog lamp?

In case if the defect cause lies in the wiring which powers the fog light bulb, you can clean the terminals. If the fog light body was depressurized as a result of incorrect installation or a small impact, you should remove it, clean the lens, apply the sealing compound to the adjoining surfaces of the lense and the fog lamp body, and then install it in its place.

In case if the defect cause is the blown out bulb, then it should be replaced. It is recommended to replace bulbs on the both car sides, otherwise light beams produced by the left and the right lamps will be different. It will discomfort the driver during vehicle driving. Take into account the fact that the replacement algorithm can vary for the cars of different models, that is why you should refer to technical documentation before replacement. Generally, the process of installation of new light bulb for fog lamp is the following:

  • Unscrew the screws which fix the bumper mudguard to the wheel arch cover; demount the mudguard.
  • Release the lock of the wire harness connector which leads to the bulb.
  • Unscrew the broken down bulb and install a new one into its place.
  • Connect the wire harness connector to the bulb and install the protection cover. Beforehand, apply the sealing compound to it if necessary.

In case if the fog lamp body is destroyed as a result of an impact or hitting by stone, the broken down component should be replaced with a new one. If the whole front part of the car is damaged, it is better to buy the car fog lamps kit for cost efficiency reasons. In order to replace the lamp in assembly you need to unscrew bolts which fix the lamp body to the car body, unlatch the wire harness terminal and demount the broken down component, then install a new one into its place.

Usually, only the broken down component is to be replaced.
Difficulty of fog lamp replacement depends on the model, configuration and production year of the car.
It is recommended to perform fog lamp replacement at a service station.

Fog lights Information

Fog lights are lamps with white or yellow glass, which light a broad and flat horizontal beam, creeping over the road to lighten the fog column. They can be located in the head optics. Fog lights are used in adverse weather conditions such as heavy rain, fog and snowstorm.

Light of lower and upper beam is reflected and scattered because of small water droplets or snowflakes, creating a translucent haze that reduces visibility. Wide light beam of the fog lights illuminates the roadside. Due to this fact it is easier to manoeuvre on twisty roads.

Fog light must have a clear upper boundary of the beam. This will ensure the driver good visibility when it is fog. Such is the nature of the fog - the higher it is from the ground surface, the harder the driver can see anything in it. This is necessary to provide good visibility in bad weather.

Also, the headlamp shall be mounted as low as possible to the road, because between the fog and road there is a gap. It is important light to get there. Fog lights are required not only when it is fog. Once they were advised to be on when driving on narrow roads with many bends in the dark. In such driving conditions speed is not high and the lights light sideways. In some modern cars headlamps turn when you turn the steering wheel.
