Throttle position sensor: common defects and their signs

1. Abrasion of resistive coating at the base of the moving contact.
   • When you release the accelerator pedal during driving, the engine turns off.
   • Fuel consumption increased.
   • Engine idle speed increases.
   • Unusual pops are heard from the intake manifold area.
2. Breakdown of the moving contact.
   • Idle revs are unstable.
   • The engine turns off at gear shifting.
   • During acceleration, car jerks.
   • Engine power drops; it is difficult to start the engine.
   • “Check Engine” signal is active on the dashboard.

How to replace throttle position sensor?

The broken down sensor cannot be repaired as it is impossible to restore the resistive coating. The defective component is to be replaced immediately. Its further use can lead to engine breakdown. When replacing the sensor, it is recommended to perform replacement of its sealing element at the same time. You can replace the component yourself. To do this, you should:

1. Shut off ignition, open the bonnet and stop battery voltage supply.
2. The required sensor is located on the car, then the wire harness connector is disconnected and the latch is released.
3. Unscrew the bolts which fix the sensor to the throttle body, and then demount the broken down component.
4. Remove the old sealing element and clean the mounting seat. Then install a new sensor together with a new sealing element, and connect the power supply to it.
