CAR EGR Valve / AGR

EGR valve: common defects and their signs

  1. Soiling
    • Engine operation is unstable at idling.
    • Fuel consumption increases.
    • Jerks are noticeable at car acceleration.
    • Failures occur in engine operation at rpm decreasing.
  2. Depressurization
    • Electronic control module gives a signal about exhaust gases recirculation system failure.
    • Fuel injectors are soiled fast.
    • Often engine stops occur.
    • Detonation of the engine can occur.

How to repair or replace EGR valve?

Operational lifetime of the exhaust gases recirculation system valve depends on quality of fuel used in the car. On the average, lifetime limit of the component is 70 000 – 100 000 kilometers of mileage.

Quite often serviceability of the part can be restored by cleaning with the help of special compounds. If cleaning didn’t help to remove defect signs, the EGR valve should be replaced. The algorithm of replacement slightly varies for cars of different models and depends on component location. It can be mounted directly on the exhaust manifold, or in the intake manifold, intake line or on the throttle unit. If you don’t have car servicing skills it is better to perform replacement of the valve at a service station. If you decided to perform it single-handedly, study technical documentation of your very own car to get familiarize with procedure details.

Generally, the procedure of EGR valve replacement consists in the following:

  1. Demount the engine cover unscrewing fasteners in advance.
  2. Disconnect wire connector from the valve.
  3. Unscrew the bolts, fastening the valve and remove it.
  4. Install a new component together with a new gasket.
