Timing chain: common defects and their signs

1. Stretching
   • Metallic sound appears from the camshaft drive when the engine is working.
   • There are failures in operation of the engine at idle.
   • Engine power lowers.
2. Breakage
   • Loud sound is heard from under the bonnet.
   • Engine stops suddenly.

How to replace a timing chain?

Average lifetime of the timing chain is 200 000 - 250 000 operational kilometers, but the exact replacement interval for this component is specified in the car manual. Moreover, chain service life is often influenced by the quality of oil used and timeliness of its replacement. Poor condition of this component and its following breakage can lead to serious damage of engine elements and, as a consequence, its expensive repair. The timing chain is not repaired. If there are signs of defect, the component is to be replaced together with the tensioner, sealing gasket and fasteners.

In order to replace the timing chain you need to contact service station specialists. It is not recommended to perform works on your own following some common action algorithm because it can vary for cars of certain models. Moreover, the replacement procedure on a car depends on its drive type and configuration. For example, demounting of a faulty component can be complicated because the alternator, air-conditioner compressor, power steering pump, camshaft and crankshaft sensors, starter, oil pan, or radiator may need removal.
