How to replace exhaust system joints and fasteners?

Repair of the exhaust system joints and fasteners is impossible. During performing any works related to the silencer which require demounting of joints and fasteners, the latter are to be replaced. Also replacement is necessary if the parts were broken down.

In most cases, you need to apply to a service station for replacement of the components. Some elements can be replaced in the car on your own, if you have special skills. To do so, you need to lift the car on a lifting platform or a ramp. It is recommended to perform these works with assistance of another person, as access to some elements is troubled. To avoid injuries, replacement should be performed only after cooling down of all exhaust system parts.

The algorithm will have its peculiarities according to the fact, which exact element is subject for replacement. For some parts, a special remover tool is required, while for removal of others, you need simply unscrew the bolts, fastening them to a bracket. Take into account, that it is advisable to use a torque wrench for screwing new bolts, in order to follow required tightening torque and proper operation of the components in future. If you don’t have whichever tools, or experience of their usage, it is recommended to apply to a service station for replacement, as the works won’t be performed correctly without special tools.

If a few elements are broken down simultaneously, it is advisable to purchase a silencer repair kit, which includes clamps, seals and other components, necessary for performing comprehensive repair works of the silencer.

Detailed recommendations according to replacement of one or another elements are noted in car technical documentation. You should study it before starting demounting.
