CAR Coolant Flange

Coolant flange: common defects and their signs

  1. Thermal deformation.
    • Lowering of the coolant level.
    • Appearance of leaks on the coolant flange housing and the engine.
    • Failures in operation of the cooling liquid pump.
    • Appearance of specific anti-freeze smell.
  2. Wear-out.
    • Increased anti-freeze consumption.
    • Engine overheating.
    • Leakage of cooling liquid.

How to replace coolant flange?

The broken down coolant flange is irreparable and requires replacement. Vehicle manufacturer recommendations should be taken into account while selecting a new component for a car. Replacement of the cooling system T-pipe can be performed single-handedly, by carrying out the next actions:

  1. After lowering of pressure in the cooling system, open the coolant tank cap and drain coolant.
  2. Carefully disconnect hoses.
  3. During replacement of the front flange, disconnect wiring from the coolant temperature sensor.
  4. Unscrew the flange and carefully remove it.
  5. Prepare location for new part installation: degrease it and grind it with a blade or soft abrasive cloth, if necessary.
  6. Apply a little sealant on a new part and then mount it to its place.
  7. Tighten nuts, adjusting tightening torque in accordance with car technical documentation.
  8. Connect the hoses, fill in the anti-freeze.

Replacement of the flange on the car is usually performed only after cool-down of the engine.
