CAR Water pump
Auxiliary water pump: common defects and their signs
- Contacts oxidation
- The engine warms up insufficiently at idle.
- The auxiliary heater turns off early.
- The cabin is warmed insufficiently when the heater is on.
- Antifreeze level drops.
- Temperature in the passenger compartment randomly increases and lowers during driving.
- Wear-out of the electromotor brushes
- The electronic control unit signalizes about auxiliary heater defect.
- Coolant leakage.
- The auxiliary pump doesn’t turn on.
- Buzzing sound appears from under the dashboard during auxiliary water pump work.
- Car windows don’t get defrosted in winter.
How to replace an auxiliary water pump?
Repair of the auxiliary water pump is not reasonable because its cleaning and replacement of brushes are not always effective.
In case of defect signs the component is to be immediately replaced. Replacement can be performed on your own if you have appropriate skills and a basic tool kit. Before starting component replacement on a car you should study the manual. The actions sequence can differ for cars of different models.
In general, the algorithm of auxiliary coolant pump replacement is the following:
- Drain coolant into a reservoir prepared in advance.
- Disconnect the pump power connector.
- Loosen clamp fixations and remove them from the pump.
- Demount the defective pump and install a new component.
- Assemble everything in the reverse order and then top up the antifreeze.
- Check operation of the new device for presence of coolant leakage.
It is recommended to perform water pump replacement at a service station.
Always replace the water pump with the rollers and belts.
