Cooling system pipes: common defects and their signs

  1. Coupling tightness loss
    • Traces of cooling liquid are seen on the coolant pipe.
    • Smell of antifreeze is noticeable in the cabin.
    • Steam comes from under the bonnet during driving.
  2. Clogging
    • Engine overheating occurs.
    • Consumption of cooling liquid increases.
  3. Mechanical damages
    • Antifreeze is leaking, its traces can be seen on the coolant tube.
    • During visual inspection of the radiator hose you can see blowup or hardening of the surface, cracks and abrasions.
    • The trip-computer indicates failure of the engine cooling system.
    • Cooling liquid is fully leaking out from the reservoir. This sign points out pipe breakage.

How to repair or replace cooling system pipes?

If soiling of the pipes is insignificant, you can be limited only to cooling system washing. During washing, a chemical compound is filled into the system; it impacts the components from the inside for some time. If this procedure was ineffective, the system is disassembled and its every element is cleaned separately. All actions noted above should be performed at a service station only, as special equipment is required for their performance. Improper washing is fraught with negative consequences for the cooling system and for the whole car.

If the pipe was torn or has significant damages, such part should be replaced. It is not recommended to replace the components on your own; in order to be sure of quality of completed work and safety of further car operation you need to apply to a service station.
