CAR Gas Struts (Tailgate Struts)

Trunk lid gas struts: common faults and their symptoms

  1. Rod deformation
    • The rear door is jammed in some position; it is difficult or impossible to move it.
    • The trunk lit stopped opening completely, it stops in the middle.
    • Opening the rear door requires excessive force
  2. Loss of seal
    • The trunk lid started opening with jerks.
    • The rear door is not held in the extreme top position.
  3. Breakage of fasteners
    • When the vehicle is driven, extraneous sounds are heard from the rear.
    • When the trunk lid is opened, the strut is not firmly set in its seat.

How to replace the trunk lid gas struts?

Weakened fasteners may be tightened, if they have not lost their integrity. However, if the component is faulty, it should be replaced, since it is not subject to repair. You can install new components yourself, but only if you have skills in car repair. To replace trunk lid strut of a vehicle, do the following:

  1. Open the trunk lid, and fix it in the open position. You can use supports, or ask an assistant to hold it.
  2. Using a flat screwdriver, pry the clips that hold the component from the top and from the bottom. Be careful: incorrect actions may result in an injury.
  3. Pull the faulty strut, and carefully remove it.
  4. Install a new component and attach it with fasteners.

If you have no experience in car repair, you should better contact a service station. Important: Trunk lid struts should be always replaced in pairs from both sides, even if only one of them is faulty. This way, you will ensure uniform load on the rear door, and prolong the service life of new components.

Trunk lid gas shock absorbers should be replaced as a set.
It is recommended to pump new gas shock absorbers before their installation.

Kinds:

  1. By installation method:
    • "piston rod down" installation;
    • two-way installation.
  2. By mounting position:
    • right;
    • left;
    • for both sides.

Gas Struts (Tailgate Struts) Information

Gas springs are used in automobile design to take the weight of the bonnet, doors and trunk lid when opening. They prevent tipping, keep weight in the open and allow you to monitor the closing. Gas springs are hydro-pneumatic adjusting products. They consist of a pressure tube and a rod with a piston package. Connecting elements of various types, which are fixed on the pressure tube and rod, provide a reliable connection with the construction of the gas spring.

Gas springs are filled with nitrogen under high pressure acting on the piston. This creates a resistance force. If the force of the gas spring is more then the resistance force, the rod is pulled out, while at a lower power the spring is compressed. The speed of compression is installed directly at the plant. In addition to the nitrogen inside the gas springs there is a required amount of oil to lubricate the moving parts, as well as to amortize the end positions. For different purposes there are manufactured springs with progressive, regressive or linear characteristics.

Piston inside the gas spring is made in such a way that the surface of the upper side is bigger then of the bottom, so that the gas pressure pushes the piston and the rod out.

Parameters of the piston and the gas pressure are adjusted individually for each car model, depending, for example, on the weight of the gate to obtain the desired characteristics. All new gas springs are tested for durability.
