CAR Thermostat
Coolant thermostat: common defects and their signs
- Jamming.
- Engine temperature increases.
- Fuel consumption increases.
- Unstable engine thermal condition during driving.
- Soiling, corrosion.
- The engine cannot warm up to working temperature.
- The heating system functions inefficiently.
- Constant engine overheating.
How to replace coolant thermostat?
Generally, it is recommended to replace the coolant thermostat every 2 years or every 80,000–100,000 operational kilometres. A broken thermostat cannot be repaired and requires replacement.
When choosing a new component take into account vehicle technical documentation. The thermostat should have matching response temperature and fit the engine type.
You can replace component on your own since the procedure is rather simple. The order differs a little for cars of different models; generally to replace the component you need to do the following:
- Drain cooling liquid into the prepared tank.
- Unscrew nuts on the thermostat housing cover.
- Remove the housing cover. Remove the thermostat and then its sealing ring.
- Install a new thermostat with a new sealing ring.
- Mount the housing cover, treat it with sealing compound, screw connections and pour cooling liquid inside.
- Start the engine and make sure there’s no antifreeze leakage.
Thermostat replacement is performed only after cooling down of a car engine.
It is important to follow safety regulations during unsupervised replacement of the cooling system thermostat.
Before starting thermostat diagnostics or replacement, you should wait until full cooldown of cooling liquid.
When installing a new thermostat, replacing its gasket is a must. If operational lifetime of cooling liquid is ending (its lifetime limit is 4 years) then it is to be replaced as well.
Average operational lifetime: 4 years or 100 000 km.
Types:
- By presence of a housing:
- with a housing;
- uncased.
- By presence of a heating resistor.
- with a heating resistor;
- without a heating resistor.
Thermostat Information
Thermostat is a regulator of fluid temperature in the engine cooling system. It speeds engine warming and supports necessary heat mode. When you initially start the engine, coolant temperature is the same as of the environment. To reduce the time of the engine warming, the thermostat blocks the flow of coolant to the radiator, sends fluid from the pump to the so-called small circle just through the engine cooling jacket and heater exchanger.
When the temperature of the engine increases, thermostat opens the valve and directs the flow of hot coolant to the large circle that includes the main radiator. Within coolant temperatures 80-95 ° C thermostat valve is in an intermediate position and the radiator goes only part of the liquid. The value of the opening of the main valve provides a gradual blending of the cooled fluid in the radiator.
Thus engine operating temperature is regulated within the temperature range. This allows high-quality modes of heating of the saloon.
There are several signs of faulty thermostat: the engine does not warm up to operating temperature, or worse, overheats, increased fuel consumption, reduced car's dynamic parameters. One more sign is when the heating system does not support a comfortable cabin temperature.
Typically, the thermostat wears every two years. If there are any problems with thermostat, it is necessary quickly to replace it. In our online shop there are reasonable prices for thermostats. We also offer moderate prices for brake cylinders, rear mufflers and fuel filters. You can order any part you need in our online shop and it will be quickly delivered.
