How to replace reversing light switch?
The reversing light limit switch is non-repairable. The component should be replaced if defect signs are found.
Complexity of the switch replacement procedure depends on its location and the type of the gearbox the car is equipped with. Sometimes, the switch is mounted in the upper part of the gearbox; in this case it is easy to perform replacement. In some cars, the part is mounted lower than oil level, so for its demounting you will need to remove the crankcase cover and to work fast, in order to avoid oil loss.
On the car with mechanical transmission, replacement of the switch can be performed by yourself, but first you should study procedure peculiarities in vehicle technical documentation. The general procedure of component replacement is the following:
- Place the car onto a lifting platform or servicing pit.
- Apply the parking brake.
- Remove the crankcase cover.
- Disconnect the terminals and wires of the switch.
- Prepare a container for a case of oil leakage which can occur when unscrewing the switch.
- Remove the switch manually or using a wrench.
- Install a new part, reassemble in the reverse order.
- In case of significant oil loss, refill it.
If necessary, replacement of the reversing light switch can be combined with motor oil replacement.
For a car with the automatic gearbox or the continuously variable transmission, process of replacement will be more laborious due to complex structure of the gearbox. Such work should be entrusted to car service station professionals.
